Saint Nicholas of Flüe, known as Brother Klaus, was a Swiss farmer, soldier, magistrate, husband, father, hermit, and spiritual counselor. With his wife’s consent he withdrew to a life of prayer, yet continued advising visitors and political leaders. His intervention is traditionally credited with helping preserve unity among the Swiss cantons. His surviving prayer expresses a radical desire for freedom from all that separates the soul from God.
