Saint Isidore was archbishop of Seville, a biblical commentator, encyclopedist, and Doctor of the Church. He worked to consolidate Christian learning in Visigothic Spain and presided over important councils. His Etymologies gathered knowledge from the ancient world into an influential medieval reference work. Isidore also wrote on Scripture, liturgy, history, doctrine, and clerical formation.
