Saint Hilary of Poitiers

Bishop · theologian · biblical commentator · hymn writer

Saint Hilary was bishop of Poitiers and a leading Latin defender of Nicene theology during the Arian controversy. Exiled to the East, he encountered Greek theological arguments and helped interpret them for Western Christians. His works include On the Trinity, commentaries on Matthew and the Psalms, hymns, and polemical writings. Hilary’s Gospel commentary is one of the earliest surviving Latin commentaries on Matthew.
