Saint Francis was an Italian penitent and founder of the movement that became the Franciscan order. After a dramatic conversion, he embraced poverty, preaching, care for lepers, fraternity, and imitation of Christ. His surviving writings include rules, letters, admonitions, prayers, and the Canticle of the Creatures. Francis’s life inspired male and female religious communities and a lay penitential movement.
