Saint Epiphanius of Salamis

Monk · bishop · heresiologist

Saint Epiphanius was bishop of Salamis in Cyprus and an energetic defender of doctrinal orthodoxy. His best-known work, the Panarion, catalogs and refutes numerous movements he considered heretical, preserving valuable information alongside polemical judgments. He was strongly opposed to Origenist theology and became involved in controversies that affected other major churchmen. His writings must be read with attention to both their documentary value and their adversarial purpose.
