Saint Dominic was a Castilian priest and founder of the Order of Preachers, or Dominicans. Confronted by religious division in southern France, he promoted a form of apostolic life combining poverty, disciplined study, common prayer, and preaching. The order he founded received papal approval in 1216 and became a major intellectual and missionary force in the Church. Early sources emphasize Dominic’s prayer, compassion, and commitment to preaching the truth.
