Origen of Alexandria

Biblical scholar · theologian · teacher

Origen was an Alexandrian biblical scholar, teacher, ascetic, and one of the most prolific theologians of the early Church. He produced the Hexapla, extensive commentaries and homilies, On First Principles, and Against Celsus. His exegesis explored literal, moral, and spiritual senses of Scripture and profoundly influenced later Christian interpretation. Some speculative teachings attributed to him became controversial and were condemned in later Origenist disputes, so his importance and his contested legacy must both be acknowledged.
