Julian was an English anchoress and mystical theologian. After a severe illness in 1373, she received a series of visions or “showings” concerning Christ’s Passion, sin, prayer, divine love, and providence. She produced short and long versions of Revelations of Divine Love, the earliest substantial English-language work known to have been written by a woman. Her famous confidence that “all shall be well” rests on trust in God’s ultimate redemptive purpose, not denial of suffering or sin.
