Guigo II was a Carthusian monk and prior of the Grande Chartreuse. His short work The Ladder of Monks describes spiritual reading as a fourfold movement: reading, meditation, prayer, and contemplation. This formulation became the classic medieval account of lectio divina. Very little is known about Guigo’s life beyond his monastic office and writings.
