The Glossa Ordinaria is not the work of a single author but a medieval school tradition of biblical glosses arranged around the scriptural text. It drew upon Fathers such as Augustine, Jerome, Gregory the Great, and Bede, along with later teachers. Its formation is often associated with the schools of Laon and figures such as Anselm of Laon, though the traditional attribution to Walafrid Strabo is no longer accepted as a sufficient explanation of the whole work. When cited in the Catena Aurea, “the Gloss” should therefore be represented as a composite source rather than a person.
